A bit of a nerd, I love science, science fiction, nature, good food, bluegrass, classical, and rock music, spirited conversation, learning new things, going to new places, and spending time with family and good friends. Oh, and dessert. Dessert is my favorite.
Though my educational background is in biology/zoology and nursing, and my most recent employment was as a nurse, animals and nature have always been my passion. For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamt of having a small farm in the country. As a grown-up with a family, being able to provide healthy food that I can feel good about has also been a dream. Albeit a much more grown-up and not-so-rock-and-roll kind of dream, nonetheless, when the opportunity came up in the spring of 2020, to make both dreams a reality, Byron and I jumped at it.
The days became months and all of a sudden a year had passed. Time continues to zip past as we work to tame and rehabilitate this wild little piece of paradise we now call Purple Mockingbird Farm. These days, my days are devoted to clearing brush, building fences and other structures, tending to our first generation of holistically managed livestock while planning and prepping for the next, not to mention learning to navigate the new (new to me anyway), universe of the business of regenerative farming.
There is never and probably will never be a shortage of things to do and this little farm will be ever-evolving. Though laborious, it is absolutely a labor of love. Nothing compares to the satisfaction of knowing we are working toward bringing better, healthier food to our customers’ families as well as our own. The health benefits of food raised in this way are undeniable as are the benefits to the planet in the process. No endeavor (aside from becoming a mother) has ever been so worthwhile or so satisfying to my soul.
